We don't all have to like each other, but having some mutual respect is a must. If your friends/family can't even be polite to your girl (and vice versa), you're the one who's gonna lose in the long run! You're right; one of my friends describes a good man as a "brick in a pillow." Soft on the outside; hard as concrete if you squeeze too hard. There's no need to be tense all the time, but having a strong sense of identity means you automatically stand up for yourself when necessary. Thanks for commenting, brother! You have to become sure of what you want and who you are at the core and you'll know how to handle most situations. In my first relationship, I invested myself very deeply because she was all I really had at that point. I wish I'd heard your advice earlier - instead, I learned first-hand that with no direction, no goals, it's nigh-impossible to be a good boyfriend or husband! Thank you for sharing.
